School of Architecture Fabrication Lab

The School of Architecture Laboratory (aka SoA Lab) is a full-service model laboratory located on the School of Architecture’s ground floor in room N-04. It features a range of equipment that can be utilized by students and faculty affiliated with the SoA after the completion of orientation and training sessions. 

SoA Shop Training

In person trainings are required for all students before they can use the lab. There are separate trainings for the woodshop, table saw, laser cutters and Zund. Users will need to complete each training to gain access to the resource. Trainings are usually coordinated through design studios or start of semester workshops, if you have missed the training please email us or stop by the shop to schedule a time to complete.

Shop Policies

  • The SoA Lab is open to student use only when it is staffed by a technician, faculty member or approved graduate student shop monitor.
  • Shop hours will be posted on the shop door. Any changes to schedule will be posted and emailed out via list serv as soon as we are made aware.
  • The SoA Lab follows, but is not limited to, all of the machine shop policies outlined by EHS found by clicking here 
    • Please make sure to review and understand them before using the shops
    • These rules apply to all spaces in the SoA Labs, no exceptions
  • For anyone working in the SoA Lab the “buddy system” should be observed at all times. By not working alone, potentially dangerous errors, accidents, and injury are more likely to be avoided.
  • Any spray painting must be done in the spray booth. Spray painting around the building and on the grounds is subject to disciplinary action.
  • Anyone working in the shops is required to clean up after themselves which includes returning tools to their proper places and vacuuming or sweeping the area they work in. 
  • 15 minutes before closing is designated as a clean up time. All tools will be shut off at this time, so please plan ahead.

Shop Staff reserves the right to deny access to students if they fail to adhere to stated and posted policies.

Starting Monday February 5th

Monday-Thursday 9am-10pm
Friday 9am-5pm
Saturday-Sunday Noon-8pm*

*Please note that tools requiring extra training or staff technician supervision are not accessible to you on the weekends.
