ECL

Embodied Computational Lab

The Embodied Computational Lab, or ECL, is located off of Scholar Way behind Frick Chemistry and in front of Jadwin Gymnasium. Access to Scholar way is off of Washington Road. It is available for supervised use to all faculty and students associated with the SoA when a monitor, staff or faculty member is present. This facility houses a robotics lab, a gantry crane, metal shop, and ample space to pursue and build complex architectural mock-ups.

ECL Training

Any student using the ECL must have completed the in person training for the woodshop for the SoA Lab. Specific training on all non-woodshop equipment is required before use. Additional required trainings may be specified after requesting use of the facility.

In addition to these trainings, Princeton University requires all students complete EHS machine shop trainings found here:

Shop Policies

  • The ECL is open to student use only when it is staffed by a technician, faculty member or approved graduate student shop monitor.
    • You must request access to use the facility. Please follow the link under this section to fill out our access form.
  • The ECL follows, but is not limited to, all of the machine shop policies outlined by EHS found by clicking here
    • Please make sure to review and understand them before using the shops
  • For anyone working in the ECL the “buddy system” should be observed at all times. By not working alone, potentially dangerous errors, accidents, and injury are more likely to be avoided.
  • All woodshop equipment used must be attached to a dust collector or shop vac.
  • Anyone working in the lab is required to clean up after themselves which includes returning tools to their proper places and vacuuming or sweeping the area they work in.

Shop Staff reserves the right to deny access to students if they fail to adhere to stated and posted policies.

Requesting Use of the Facility

Any student, staff or faculty must request use of the facility before gaining access to the ECL. While we try to accommodate all projects please note that our space and staffing is limited and we do have courses as well as on-going faculty research that make use the space.
