Laser cutter and Computer setup

General Information

The SoA Lab is equipped with 2 Universal PLS 6.150 Co2 75-Watt Laser Cutters which have a bed size of 32" x 18"

These machines are located in the SoA Lab and are free to use during shop hours as long as training has been completed and rules are followed.

Please download and use our laser cutter template found at the bottom of this page.

Make sure that you’ve read and fully understood the rules outlined below before using the equipment.

Laser Cutter Rules

  • The Laser Cutters are for students enrolled in School of Architecture courses or faculty associated with the School of Architecture only.
    • These machines are for SoA related projects only, not for personal projects or projects for other departments.
    • Laser Cutter Training must be completed before using these machines.
  • Each person/group is only allowed 1 machine at a time. 
  • You must remain in the room and attentive on the machines the entire time your file is cutting.
    • You must stop your file and fix your file if your material is not cutting correctly or is causing excess smoke or a flame near the lens
    • If you do not know how to fix your file please speak with a shop monitor or technician.
  • If you are unsure of how to operate the machine correctly, or have questions about material settings please speak with a shop monitor or technician before starting your file.
  • Do not waste machine time be courteous to the other students waiting for the machines.
    • Join your linework and nest your geometry together, leaving at least an 1/8" or 3mm spacing between pieces. 
      • You may have your pieces touching as long as you have removed any overlapping line.
    • Do not laser cut hatching, there are better, faster ways to represent materiality in your model.
    • If you must show furniture, use simple geometry to represent furniture, do not use CAD blocks you've downloaded offline. 
  • Make sure that none of your geometry is less than 0.05" or 1.27mm
  • Machines shut off 15mins before closing for cleaning.
    • If it is close to the end of the day please check the time estimate on your file before sending it. Files will be cancelled if they run over time.

Failure to comply with the above policies may result in termination of your file.

Multiple infractions may result in a removal of your privileges.
