General Information

The SoA Lab is equipped with a Panther CNC Router by CAMaster. The Mill can accommodate material up to 4’-0” x 8’-0”.

This machine is available to students and faculty when an approved technician is available. It is not available for use on the weekends.

You must make an appointment with a technician to use this machine. Please make sure you've read and understand all the rules below and reviewed the CNC guidelines handout found under the related documents section at the bottom of this page.

CNC Rules

  • The CNC Mill is for students enrolled in School of Architecture courses or faculty associated with the School of Architecture only.
    • This machine is for SoA related projects only, not for personal projects or projects for other departments.
  • Do not setup your CAM file on your own. Please set it up with an approved technician.
    • We will happily walk you through and explain the process as we go, but setting the files up with us allows us to catch any issues before they reach the machine.
  • You must make an appointment to use this machine. Please use link below this section.
    • You do not need to make an appointment if you are coming in to ask basic questions about milling. Please make sure you've reviewed the handouts below before coming in, as they may answer your questions.
    • You do need an appointment if your file is ready to be checked and setup for the mill.
    • Please download our template file and have it setup with your project before coming in. Instructions are located in the setup section of the CNC Guidelines document.
    • This appointment is for a consultation with a technician. We will set up your cam file together and get a time estimate.
  • Do not expect to use the Mill on the same day your file is checked.
    • We will setup an appointment for using the CNC mill after your consultation.
  • You must remain with the machine and be attentive until your file is finished.
    • Your file will be paused if you leave the room.
    • Your file may be cancelled if you walk away from the machine.
  • The SoA Lab stocks endmills for basic operations. If you require a specialty endmill you will need to supply it.
    • Check with a technician if you are unsure if you require an endmill that is not supplied.
  • If you plan to stack material, do not laminate your material together before consulting a technician about your project.
  • All material that is laminated together must be glued a minimum of 24hrs in advance of your milling appointment.
